Cott Kelby is the editor, publisher and co-founder of Photoshop User magazine, publisher of Light It magazine (dedicated to studio lighting and off-camera flash), and host of the weekly online video podcast The Grid and Photoshop User TV.

Scott is president National Association Photoshop professionals (NAPP - National Association of Photoshop Professional) and the president of Kelby Media Group, which produces educational literature and conducting courses. He is the author of more than 50 books on digital photography, including bestsellers such as Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4: A Guide to Digital Photo Processing (2013), Adobe Photoshop CS6: A Guide to Digital Photography (2013), Portrait Retouching with Photoshop for photographers (2012), Lighting, shooting, retouching. Step by step guide based on studio shooting (2012). For the past two years, Scott Kelby has been voted the #1 author in the photography book segment. Scott's books have been translated into dozens of languages, including Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Korean, Polish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Swedish, Turkish, Portuguese and others.

Perhaps not everyone realizes it, but the great thing about portrait photography is that people are the only subjects who can speak to you. Judge for yourself: when you shoot landscapes, buildings, cars, interior elements - none of the above will start a conversation with you, unless (a very important clarification) you took LSD before shooting. That’s when literally everything around you starts talking to you: clouds, white-maned horses, daisies on your palms... However, sometimes this is a little annoying, because when a whole crowd of inanimate objects rushes to talk nonsense at the same time, it’s not so easy to concentrate on shooting. I had this experience somewhere in the 1960s, when I was running through a rice field with my platoon to the music of Jimi Hendrix. (Although no, I’m confusing it, it was not a rice field, but a golf course near my parents’ house. And since I was only about five years old at the time, I probably ran not with my platoon, but with the neighbor boys, and we must have they weren’t listening to Jimi Hendrix, but “And then the clouds will probably suddenly start dancing.” But, you know, the 60s were so long ago, can you remember everything?) Be that as it may, when going to the object on a mission, remember three main principles. 1. First, remove strangers from the frame. 2. Then remove the security of the object. 3. If you are surrounded by police, do not throw your lens down the drain. You can’t wash it off later, and this will be considered an aggravating circumstance.

The book is written as if we were on a shoot, and I share with you tips and recommendations that I myself once received from the best professional photographers. But when I go on a shoot with my friend, I never get into technical details. In other words, if you ask me, “Scott, how far from my subject should I place my softbox if I want to create the softest lighting possible?”, I won’t give you a long lecture about studio light, but I’ll simply answer: “Put it as close as possible to the subject so that it almost falls into the frame. The closer the softbox, the softer light". I will speak briefly and to the point. Do you like it? This is exactly how everything will happen.

In this volume I will tell you what the readers of the previous volume asked me for. For example, the chapter on external flashes will no longer explain how and why to group flashes, since that was covered in Volume 3. Instead, we will pick up where we left off. Therefore, do not be lazy to read volumes 1, 2 and 3 first.

In principle, if you haven’t read the first three volumes, then there’s nothing particularly terrible about it, except that I didn’t get an extra penny. (How do you like this kind of self-promotion?) However, jokes aside. If you are really interested in the topic of off-camera flashes and studio lighting, then read the corresponding chapters in Volumes 2 and 3 first, as this volume assumes that you are already familiar with the topic.

Description:“Imagine that you and I went on a shoot and you asked, ‘Scott, I want to shoot a portrait that is soft and without harsh shadows. How far away should you place the softbox?" In response, I will not give you a long lecture about studio lighting, but will simply tell you: "Move the softbox as close to the subject as possible so that it almost falls into the frame." This is my approach. You and I are photographing , I answer questions, give advice, and share secrets I know as if I were chatting with a friend—without complicated explanations or technical jargon." This is not a book about photography theory, filled with terms and abstruse reasoning. It explains in simple terms what buttons to press, what settings to use, and how best to shoot. With nearly 200 professional techniques, you'll learn how to take sharper, clearer, more expressive photos that will captivate the viewer's imagination. Each page describes one technique or another that will help improve the quality of your photos. As you leaf through the book, you will learn about new equipment, new settings needed for shooting, and special secrets known to professionals. If you are tired of taking mediocre pictures and you look at illustrations in glossy magazines, asking yourself: “Why can’t I do this?” - you have found the right book!
