Hello, Dear readers of the site season-stroy.ru

In continuation of the topic of caring for our smaller brothers, I previously wrote about how to make for starlings, today we will learn how to build. This is especially true in winter period when there is not enough natural food, and the bait of the birds remaining to winter in our area is most necessary.

In this article, I offer my version of a bird feeder with detailed diagrams and drawings.

Making a bird feeder. Feeder drawing.

Before proceeding directly to the process of making a bird feeder, let's prepare a workplace.

For work, we need the following tool - a jigsaw or a hacksaw, a hammer, a screwdriver. We will fasten the structure with the help of self-tapping screws, nails and wood glue.

We use a bar as a material, plywood - 4 mm, a bead, a wooden corner, mainly these are the remains of the previous ones.

So let's get started.

1. We start assembling the feeder from the base. To do this, we use pre-cut to size bars. We lay them out as shown in the figure and fix them with self-tapping screws, gluing the junction points. This is how the box turned out.

2. Cut out a 23 x 23 cm square from plywood. It will serve as the bottom of the feeder. After we nail it with nails to the resulting box.

3. We fasten the side bars in the amount of 2 pieces, we will subsequently make perches on them. We use a bar 33 cm long, fasten it onto self-tapping screws, so that the overhang of the ends on each side is 5 cm.

4. We mount racks under the roof. We fix four racks 20 cm long on the inner sides of the box, as follows.

5. Let's start assembling the roof. To do this, we separately assemble two frames according to the scheme.

Now we fasten the frames to the racks using self-tapping screws and glue. One note: so that the bar does not crack when screwing in the self-tapping screw, it is advisable to pre-drill a hole for it.

6. We make a roof. As such, we use plywood, cut into two rectangles 21 x 33 cm. Align and nail it to the frame on nails.

7. To give the roof a finished look, we make a skate. For the ridge, a wooden corner is suitable, which we glue on carpentry glue.

8. It remains to make the crossbars, the so-called perches. For this, I used a regular glazing bead and wood glue.

9. I plan to hang the feeder on a tree and these screws came in handy to solve this problem.

Having previously drilled a hole of the desired diameter in the ridge, screwed in two screws.

The product will look more neat and aesthetic if you cover the caps of the self-tapping screws with wood putty, and then sand it with sandpaper until it is even.

To prolong the life of our crafts made of wood, I treated it with a protective solution. In this case, I do not advise using solvent or white spirit impregnation, it is better to do this with a water-based composition.

Well, to add zest to our creation, I decided to paint the feeder. I got an airbrush from a friend, mixed some paint, prepared a stencil, and this is what happened in the end.

Now it remains only to hang and pour food. As such, oats, dried berries, sunflower seeds, millet, fruit pieces, etc. are suitable. For the feeder, choose a place closed from the wind and inaccessible to cats.

So, having spent a little time, they did a good deed. I'm sure everyone can do do-it-yourself bird feeder, and thereby contribute to the care of animals.

We offer you a selection of various options for making bird feeders with your own hands. Here we have collected the best tutorials and step-by-step tutorials, as well as dozens of original ideas and photos for inspiration. In this article, you will find crafts of varying degrees of complexity: from those that take no more than 5 minutes to create, to those that you have to tinker with.

Creating feeders is one of better ways organize excellent leisure and at the same time help feathered creatures survive the cold. This is a really useful and very good deed - by hanging a feeder, you will not let the birds die of hunger (in urban conditions, this, unfortunately, is quite possible).

What do you need to pay attention to?

Earlier, we already told you about how to choose the right wood for creating birdhouses. If you are planning to make a tree feeder, check out our tips. However, feeders can be made from other materials. Here are some general important tips before starting the creative process.

  1. If you want to make the feeder look bright, only paint the outside of the feeder to prevent the birds from accidentally pecking and ingesting harmful chemicals.
  2. When creating feeders, make sure that the hole into which the bird flies is smooth on all sides (this is especially true for bottle feeders, the edges of which can be scratched if not carefully cut). This will help protect the birds from accidental injury.
  3. If you use glue or varnish in your work, carefully study their composition. They should not contain toxic elements.
  4. Do not make paper feeders too large - if a bird sits in it, the craft may tear and harm the bird.
  5. Remember that wooden feeders can get dangerous mold, and metal ones can rust. Therefore, it is better to protect them with a special coating (without harmful chemicals).
  6. It is important to check the cleanliness of the feeder from time to time and examine it for damage.

from wood

Let's move on to the manufacturing process. Standard wooden feeder performed in the form of a birdhouse or a house. They can also be made in several variations. We offer you the most popular of them.

House with uprights

Use this drawing with dimensions. The picture is clickable, and it has step-by-step instruction on assembling a feeder with your own hands.

Please note that vertical posts can be replaced with thick branches.

The hut can be made of plywood, but it will need to be varnished.

Vary the size and height of the sides.

House with side walls

An approximate assembly scheme for this hut looks like this. Please note that the dimensions can be proportionally changed and adjusted.

The side walls can be made solid. Interesting decor will add attractiveness to the house.

You can cut neat round holes in the side faces. Remember to sand them so that the birds do not pick up a splinter.

If the design turned out to be small, it is better to fill it with cereals and seeds glued together into a special treat. More on this below.

edible feeder

To feed the birds, you can do without the feeder in the usual form. We will prepare special “cookies” for birds and simply hang them on branches.

We will need:

  • 2 packs of gelatin;
  • 2/3 cup of water;
  • 2 cups of food (seeds, cereals);
  • skewers;
  • cookie cutters.

Pour gelatin with hot water and wait for it to swell. Then we mix it with cereals and seeds. Mix the mass well and fill its molds for cookies or muffins. Insert a skewer to make a hole.

When the mass has cooled and “grabbed”, carefully remove it from the mold and pull out the skewer. Insert thread into the hole.

If you don’t have molds, spread the gelatin mixture on the sleeve from toilet paper and roll it over the stern to make it stick. Let dry, then attach to a branch.

You can also roll the mixture into lumps and place them in bags in a large mesh.

Such a treat is very popular with birds.

A lot of money is spent on the improvement of the territory, beautiful paths, flower beds, playgrounds with lanterns and benches. But in order to attract birds to the yards or summer cottages all you need is a little imagination. By this we will save the birds, teach children to take care of the environment. Let's figure out how to make a feeder for various birds.

Rules for creating a feeder

Important! When you tame birds to the feeder, you need to take care of them in the winter. Otherwise, they will have a hard time easy prey stern. So that they do not die, be sure to support your birds in the cold. A few grains can save their lives.

The poultry canteen must meet the requirements of:

  • Be sure to make bumpers, otherwise the wind will carry away the food.
  • Sand sharp edges, they are dangerous for injuries to the legs of birds.
  • Food should be protected from bad weather (snow and rain) with a roof.
  • Ensure that the bird table is not accessible to cats.
  • Consider the width of the holes in the craft, birds are afraid of closed spaces.
  • Choose a reliable material for the product so that it lasts at least 1 season.
  • So that the craft does not sway from the wind, you need to weight it with pebbles or a piece of linoleum.
  • Predators are found in the forest: weasels, ermines and ferrets. If the feeder is in the forest, the feed should not fall to the ground, this will attract bird enemies.

Everyone has different views and possibilities for a bird table. Therefore, there are many exclusive designs.

Types of feeders:

  • suspension;
  • tray;
  • area;
  • house;
  • bunker;
  • peeler.

Different types of birds will choose a particular feeder.

Original bird feeders

Wooden feeder

The largest number of wooden crafts. They can be made from small planks, if the wood is treated (impregnated and varnished), it will last a long time.

From the slats, interesting bird houses are also obtained. It will add strength and protect the roof covering with roofing material from water. The slats themselves are fastened with small nails (deep into the tree) or glued.

You can use plywood and sticks, they will be less visible on the trees. This is the simplest and most convenient method of creating crafts. You don't even need processing.

Particularly interesting and beautiful products are obtained from birch. If the roof is also made of birch, then it is better to varnish it.

A durable product will be a 25-30 cm piece of wood. You can make about 15 cm an entrance to the hollow, where to pour the grain. In a horizontal position, hang on hooks to a tree.

Plywood will also make excellent houses, with the help of a jigsaw you can choose the desired shape for the "windows". Then paint and varnish.

With armrests where birds will sit. Feed is poured into the seat. Behind the back of the swing is fixed on a tree.

Experienced craftsmen create simply masterpieces for birds: fabulous houses with intricate openwork patterns and shapes. But here you need a jigsaw and skill. Can be covered with a mat to give more protection product. Various colors can be given with a soldering iron.

Be sure to protect the product from moisture in order to preserve the beauty and your work for a long time.

The photo below shows elite versions of products made by craftsmen. They will become a worthy decoration of a summer house or a private house.

Plastic bottle feeder

The easiest way to make do-it-yourself bird feeders, which are made from a plastic bottle. The availability of material and ease of implementation will allow everyone without the skills to make a bird's dining room without much effort.

The transparency of the product will interfere with the observation of the behavior of the birds. You will be surprised how many birds will visit your dining room.

Important! When cutting, there will be sharp edges of the bottle, they should be treated with insulating tape. Otherwise, little friends may injure their paws or feathers.

Bottles can be used from juices 1.5-2 liters, 5 liters or 19 liter bottles. Here, too, there is a place for your creativity.

Sometimes they use containers where there were liquids for cars. They are more dense, some with handles, for which it is convenient to hang them on a tree.

If you cut 4 windows in a square container, under them you can make small holes for 2 perches at different levels.

To prevent the craft from swinging, put small pebbles or pieces of linoleum on the bottom. You can see examples of bird tables in the photo below. The only disadvantage of such bird tables is that they are not transparent.

Advice! In plastic products, small holes must be made in the bottom so that water does not linger.

Another easy craft idea. Fill an ordinary transparent bottle of 1.5-2 liters with grains, cereals, close the lid and fasten it with wire on a tree branch with the neck down. Make small holes at the bottom of the bottle so that birds can feast on it. A little lower, insert long dense branches through the bottles so that it is convenient to sit and peck. So there will be no need for a roof, the grain will sink by itself, water will not collect at the bottom.

Decorations for feeders

How do they decorate their products from 5 l bottles? Many ideas can be seen in the photo below.

You can transform the feeder beyond recognition for different birds made from a bottle. For example, wrap the bottle with burlap or twine. Instead of a roof, strengthen a bast, small twigs, hang cones on the side, a spruce twig, artificial flower etc.

The bottle can be painted to your liking.

Other original crafts

From cardboard boxes(packages) that are used for dairy products and juice also make interesting bird tables. They are not too thin, they can withstand sparrows and titmouse.

A high ready-made package left after milk (juice), cut out 1 side completely in the center, two adjacent ones - to the middle. You will get a large window, leave about 15 cm to the bottom. Pour seeds, grains, then thread the rope over the top edge, and fasten the bag to a strong branch.

Such bags have excellent moisture resistance and will become an affordable product even for elementary school students.

Advice! To extend the life of the package - the dining room for birds, it can be covered with a film or ordinary tape for strength.

What can be used to feed the birds?

Lots of creative ideas:

  • Glue the mug to the saucer with the handle up, for which we hang it from a branch. The saucer will comfortably accommodate several birds.
  • It is possible to strengthen several plastic cups with food on the wire. Even apples or oranges will appeal to pichugs.
  • Swinging swing - a saucer with food on chains will attract titmouse and beautiful blue tit.
  • You can take a coconut shell as a basis and cut out a ¼ volume window. It will be convenient for everyone, and a lot of food will fit inside.
  • A wicker basket with a handle is also suitable, but closed models are better.
  • You can glue corks in different shapes.
  • The egg tray is an unusual and lightweight design, easily attached to the edges with long ropes. Instead of eggs - food for several guests.
  • Metal tin can, cut 1 side in half so that the food does not wake up. A little lower, be sure to insert a long stick protruding by 7-10 cm.

Advice! In winter, there are not enough vitamins. You can put viburnum berries, mountain ash, dry rose hips, even apple or pear cores, pumpkin seeds, etc. into the feeders.

So that you can imagine how different dining rooms for different birds can look like, see the photo gallery, the choice is huge.
