When most people hear the word “auction,” they immediately think of the classic English open auction that is so often shown in films: after the minimum price is announced, bidders name prices above the starting price, and in the end, the winner is the one who offers the highest price that competitors cannot beat. However The auction on eBay follows a different pattern., which you need to understand in order to win the auction and get the product you are interested in.

eBay is the so-called second price auction: the product goes to the buyer who offered the highest price, but he will pay for it not his bid, but the second highest bid plus the so-called bid increment. Let's look at an example of how the bidding process works on eBay.

When putting an item up for sale, the seller indicates the minimum price for which he is willing to sell the item and the duration of the auction. Let's say the starting price is $15. One of the potential buyers (let's call him Buyer 1) sees the product and decides to bet on it 30 dollars and makes a bet.

The system remembers his bid, but the displayed price remains the same. It will change only after another buyer places a bid (Buyer 2). Buyer 2, not knowing how much was bet before him, decides to bet $20.

Since his bid is less than that of Buyer 1, the system will increase the cost of the product by the so-called minimum bid increment. The rate step depends on the price of the product, in in this case it will be 50 cents. Thus, after Buyer 2 bids, the displayed price for the item will be 15.5 dollars.

After this, Buyer 3 enters the auction and decides to bid $25. After this, the price of the lot will rise to 26 dollars(the second maximum price plus the bid increment, which for a price in the range of $25-$99.99 is $1), but the leader will still be Buyer 1, who bid $30.
